Pretty on The Inside...

You know, I've never really had a long, thoughtful look at the insides of my filled cupcakes - when I make them I taste-test as each componant is finished but rarely eat a fully assembled cake - they get sent out into the world as quickly as they're made. However, after a midweek order was completed and boxed up, I found myself with enough leftovers to make two more Blushette - one for me and one for Kevin. So, taking just as much care as I would if they were part of an order, I fussed up my two tiny cakes, with their sweet, vanilla-ey white chocolate paired with tart raspberry, and took them home to our fridge. No eating them that night - I wanted to wait for daylight to take some snaps of their 'guts' - which consisted of Raspberry buttercream and an up-turned raspberry.

So now I know. Not bad but I think they probably look a little creamier when they havn't been refridgerated overnight - the buttercream gets a little stiff when it's cold and I wonder if the raspberry might hold its shape a little better the first day. Next time I'll make sure to take it apart right after I put it together - then I can eat it on the spot as God intended.

Little Kids are so Fun...

I tried my hand at a few Elmo cupcakes for a two-year-old boy's birthday

I wanted his smile to get bigger and bigger but I realize now that his smile should be more of a half moon than a crescent shape. Hope it didn't ruin his party!

Lucky, Lucky Girl...

Christmas has come and gone for the l'il elves of Poppy Mallow but before it passed it left for us some pretty wonderful blessings. Not one, but two KitchenAid stand mixers! My very supportive families have given me the item on the very tippy-top of my big girl wish list and I now am the proud owner of two gloriously red 90th anniversary editions - complete with sparkely glass bowls and enough mixing power to cement a basement.

Here's the first one under the tree, looking dashing. The second would arrive while we were away for holidays.

And here she is on her maiden voyage making swiss meringue for a lemon buttercream. The meringue was cooled and fluffy before I could get my butter cubed.
And here is the result of an afternoon spent with my shiny new work-horses - it makes me happy to think I will likely have these pretty friends for as long as I can hold a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Little Violet Tarte - Lemon Buttercream frosting on Vanilla Cream Cake with with Lemon Curd filling

Prairie Girl - Peanut-Butterscotch icing on Vanilla Cream Cake. I've been playing around with the toppings on this one and here I have a peanutbutter jelly bean and a strawberry jam jellybean. I don't know if I'll stick with it or not. The icing is my own creation inspired by one of my favourite treats as a kid and I think it might be one of my best flavours, if I can be so bold - the recipe is a fiercely guarded secret.
